Green Square

 – a case study of Urban Consolidation and Renewal in Green Square

Building Better Cities 2 Green Square supports Stage 6 Geography and focuses on the dynamics of urban renewal and urban consolidation in Green Square. Students will learn about the NSW Department of Planning’s goals for Sydney’s growth and development and visit the Green Square development site to identify and investigate the urban dynamics of renewal and consolidation.

The program has three main components:

  1. Introductory activities and resources to introduce the students to the fieldwork
  2. A whole day fieldwork experience in the CBD and Green Square
  3. Follow up activities to enhance geographical knowledge and skills

During the fieldwork day, students will:

  • Visit the City of Sydney Council to view the City of Sydney and Green Square planning models and to listen to a City of Sydney Green Square urban planner discuss the Green Square development.
  • Visit Green Square to view the Urban Dynamics of urban consolidation and renewal and to asses the sustainability and livability of Green Square, using ‘best practice’ planning principals, in order to answer a fieldwork question.

1. Website investigation

  • Students view information about the case study area, and investigate the associated urban dynamics operating.
  • Become familiar with the study areas and urban dynamics of change.
  • Identify the key agencies and policies in place to manage growth in Sydney.
  • Identify and discriminate between relevant sources of geographical information.

2. Overview – Green Square

  • Students view the City of Sydney and Green Square planning models and listen to a green square urban planner discuss the Green Square development.
  • Consolidate their understanding of the urban dynamics and familiarise themselves with the Green Square study site.

Green Square 3. Green Square Presentation

  • Students will listen to a presentation by EEC teachers on Green Square, in the context of Sydney’s overall growth and development.
  • Consolidate their understanding of urban dynamics and the place of Green Square in the overall plan for developing Sydney as a liveable  city.

4. Fieldwork Tasks

  • Students will undertake a geographical field work task to investigate the impacts of the urban dynamics of urban consolidation and renewal on the future liveability of Green Square.
  • Draw conclusions about the effects of urban dynamics on the future liveability of the precinct.
